About the School.
The Cyprus School for the Deaf was
established in 1953 in Nicosia as a public residential school. Up to the late
80's the School was the only center of education of the Hearing Impaired in Cyprus. In
1998, the H.I. students started being integrated into regular schools and since
then the number of the students in the School has been decreasing.
With the implementation of "The Education and Training of Children with Special
Needs Low of 1999" the number of the students in the School
has decreased further down and today the vast majority of the H.I are integrated
into regular schools. Currently, 18 pupils aged 3-21 years attend the School. The
School historically has been oral. Lately, however, the mode of communication
has moved towards the Total Communication. But, still much emphasis is put on
oral communication
Education programs and services provided by the school:

Preschool and Kindergarten
Program for children aged 3-6 years.
Currently, all the children participating in the program are cochlear
implanted. Major educational aim is to prepare the children to be integrated
in general school system. Mode of communication: aural-oral.

Education Programs
for children with additional disabilities. Mode of communication: Total
communication.

Secondary Education Program,
for the more capable students

Vocational Trainings
Programs in cooperation with public Technical Schools and the Manpower
Development Authority adapted for their needs.

Audiological services at the school' s fully equipped Audiology
Center
-
Early Intervention and Family Guidance Program
for children aged up to 3 years and their families. This service is
peripatetic.

Support to integrated H.I. students at all levels of education

In service teachers training.

Seminars for teachers of general
schools who are involved in programs for H.I.
-
Services to Adult Deaf through the Adult Deaf
Rehabilitation and Welfare Service, including:
Vocational rehabilitation and
job placement, further education, interpreting, information on legal issues
and rights, social integration, family welfare and recreation, volunteer
program for educational support to hearing children of Deaf parents.
